General Meeting 8pm this Friday (10th September 2010)

The meeting will begin with the official AGM. Club elections will be held, all committee positions will be declared vacant. Don't think that just because you turn up - you will be given a job. Turn up even if you don't want one because we plan to get the boring official stuff done fairly quickly and move on to our guest speaker's talk!

Our guest speaker this month is Bob Bubic from GAA. He will be speaking on the topic of Corundum and the Beryl family. For those of you who don't know Bob - he's a current lecturer in Gemmology at GAA.

Workshops

Workshops are a fun way to learn lapidary skills.

There are several classes offered. These include: Faceting classes, Cabachon classes, Silversmithing classes, and an Opal course.

Workshops are held at the Clubrooms (Cheong Park, Cnr Bayswater & Eastfield Rds, Croydon, 3136) most Saturdays.

At 11am most Saturdays, everyone takes a short break from using the machinery while an information session about a gem/mineral is be held. A different gem/minerla will be covered by our resident gemmologist (Pien) each week.

Workshop times:

Saturday:

10:00am - 1:00pm cabochon instruction is available.

1:00pm - 4:00pm cabochon (no instruction), and silversmithing (some instruction available but we're all still learning).

Visitors Welcome.

The workshop is also open Tuesday evenings 7:00-10:00pm.

Use of machinery on these evenings is restricted to those who have already completed basic courses, so that the person who uses the machinery can work independently.

Use of slabbing saws on Tuesdays will have to fit in with the requirements to prepare rocks for the rock swap.

You can confirm when/if the workshop is on by calling Henk Holmer. PH: 9870 9336

Field Trips

Our next field trip has been cancelled due to an influx of water where we want to be. Unfortunately none of us are trained scuba divers!

We have some combined club field trips planned for upcoming months though.

Field trips are only open to club members - so they are not advertised in full here.

If you are interested in coming to a field trip you need to contact us.

It is essential that anyone who comes is a member of a gem/mineral club in order to be covered by insurance.

Most field trips also require the member to have a miner's licence on them at the time of the trip. Miner's Rights can be purchased for about $28 for 2 years.
